Manning Market

An old and popular public market for fruits and vegetables market located in the heart of Colombo. It was once a colonial structure but today, it consists of over 1000 stalls and more than 60 open booths for sales.

Pettah Fort

Pettah Fort is an ideal example of amazing colonial architecture in the midst of rampant commerce. Being the financial district of Colombo, here you will find the World Trade Center in which the Colombo Stock Exchange operates. Also located here is the Colombo port, the largest and busiest port in the country and dates back to the 14th Century.

Galle Face Green

This is a massive ocean side urban park, stretching for 500m along the coast line and is located in the heart of the financial district of Colombo. It is perfect for a relaxing evening while watching the sun set. Kite flying is also a popular activity here.

Old Parliament Building

This building houses the presidential secretariat and is a remains of British colonial architecture. It is situated in the Colombo Fort, close to the house of the President and has an amazing view of the sea.

BMICH is an exclusive convention centre reputed for its luxurious conference facilities and is an ideal location for a complete event. Historical prominence of Anuradhapura

 

  • 4th century BC was when Anuradhapura became the capital of ancient Lanka – during the reign of King Pandukhabaya.
  • Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century BC – during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.
  • King Tissa built the country’s first Stupa to house the relic of Budhha’s right collarbone.
  • He also planted the sacred Bo Sapling brought by Princess Sangamitta, Indian Emperor Asoka’s daughter. Today, this tree is considered as the oldest living tree in the world.
  • King Tissa built irrigation tanks and a man-made lake (still in use today) to develop inland agriculture.
  • Towards the end of the 3rd century, King Mahasena built 16 irrigation tanks and the tallest stupa: Jethavanaramaya.
  • In the 2nd century BC, King Dutugemunu successfully recaptured the city whenever it fell to invading Indian armies.
  • King Dutugemunu’s reign saw a massive construction boost including monuments such as Ruwanweliseya Stupa, Mirisavetiya Temple, and the Brazen Temple.
